In the coastal zones, waste disposal contributes to the degradation of water quality. It has created marine pollution and considerable hazards to human health and also endangered the marine environment. The risk of (1) dispersion of pathogen organisms capable of endangering human health, (2) toxic effects on aquatic life and human life, (3) eutrophication resulting from the widespread dispersion of nutrients, (4) oxygen stress, and (5) the emergence of red tides and toxic micro-organisms may increase. Health problems due to wastewater pollution can become severe for the large populations living in coastal areas. These problems may have global impacts beyond country borders. As coastal areas are also used as fish catchments, conservation areas, and holiday resorts for recreation and swimming, economic impacts of wastewater on coastal ecosystems are likely to be extensive (UNEP/WHO/UNHabitat/WSSCC, 2004).
