Satic tests. were studie.d for the .determination of mechanical properties of brittle
matel'las: SpeCImens. of bnttle mt en als, represented by cermets having five different
compo sl!On s, were subJ ccted to tenstle, compressive, torsional, transverse, and impact tests.
The desIgns of specimens and apparatus, suitability of the t ests to the materials, r efinements
Il1 test procedures, and the variability of results and their correlation were studied. The
elastic prope.r t.ies were obtained from tensile, compressive, and t ransverse tests, and the
modulus of n gldlty calculated from t he re liltS of these tests agreed with t hat from t he tors!
On 1 test. TenSIle strength was obtained from t he tensile, torsional, and transverse tests on
specllnens. of cmparabl e s izes o accordance with a limit ing tensile strain. Shear strengths
were obtamed III t he compressive tests. The correlation of impact valu es with mcchanical
properties was unsatisfactory.
