Method of data collection and analysis used in the case studies
FCVA is based on the “extended value stream analysis” approach outlined by Jones
and Womack (2002). In order to cut through the complexity that typifies most supply
chains, a particular value stream is chosen as a sample for detailed analysis. The value
stream comprises specific operational units along the supply chain; for example, a
specific farm, a specific processing plant, a specific distribution centre and a specific
retail outlet. A representative product or stock keeping unit (SKU) is also selected as a
focus for data collection. With the chosen value stream as the focus, data is collected
and analysed using the framework shown in Figure 1
