Moraceae is an angiosperm plant family very rich in edible species characterised by milky latex in all parenchymatous tissue, unisexual flowers, anatropous ovules, and aggregated drupes or achenes. Moraceae are divided in five tribes, between them Ficeae are monotypic with a pantropical distribution and ∼750 species. Ficus is one of the thirty-seven genera of this family, and its distribution in America consists of over 100 species divided into two subgenera: Ficus subg. Urostigma (Gasparrini) Miq. sect. Americana Miq. and Ficus subg. Pharmacosycea (Miq.) Miq. sect. Pharmacosycea. Ficus spp. represents an ancient source of food and health; its importance is as remarkable as to be named in several chapters of Christian sacred texts, the Gospels ( Raya, 2006)
