Freshly collected adult mites were confined in small paper bags (4 cm5 cm) made from
heat sealable paper (C R Crompton Ltd) and immersed in insecticides at room temperature
for 1 min. Bags were left to dry at room temperature in a fume hood for around 30 min
before being hung in a plastic box (70% humidity) and incubated for 24 h at 30C. Bags
were immersed briefly in water to improve visualisation before being inspected under a
dissecting microscope to see whether they were alive (i.e. showed movement) or dead (i.e.
showed no movement).
