3.1. Subjects characteristics
The age of the 22 men participating in the study was 23.6 ± 5.7
years,height was 181.3 ± 6.5 cm, andmass was 74.2 ± 9.2 kg (before
the cycle test) and 74.0 ± 9.7 kg (before the run test). Ten subjects
indicated that cycling was their predominant sport, 10 listed running,
and one each listed swimming and triathlon. We purposely
selected varying types of endurance-trained individuals in order to
obtain as representative of a sample of all endurance-trained men
as possible rather than just runners and cyclists. Since we were
interested in comparing cycling and running, rather than ‘runners’
versus ‘cyclists’, it was imperative to include individuals trained
in varying endurance events. All subjects reported training at least
four days per week at running, cycling, and/or swimming modes of
exercise. All subjects subjectively estimated their level of fitness to
be from ‘good’ to ‘excellent’.
