1 . Success and Failure in IT Business
Although earlier predicted to make nice profit, dot- coms don't really make money and they're all doomed to failure. The phrase profitable Internet Company is a contradiction in terms. But is Internet business really that bad? During the short-lived glory days of dot-coms, venture predicted that they would soon take over and make over the business world. But of course big shakeouts in 2000 and 2001sent most of the upstarts packing.
A closer look reveals, however, that the survivors are holding up pretty well. In fact, many are starting to show nice profits. In the travel sector, Expedia, Hotels.com, and Priceline are making money. New fewer than 10 public finance companies are now profitable, with firms such as E-Trade performing quite well.
Although hurt by recent ad slump, some media and advertising business are in the black, and several companies, including Amazon.com and Ticketmaster USA, are doing well. In other sectors, successful dot-coms include auctioneer eBay, Intuit and McAfee, and WebEx Communications.
But just because some firms seem to have turned the corner doesn't mean that there will be another sudden increase in new businesses. After being affected by financialloss, entrepreneurs have now come to realize that e-commerce is much more than putting up a web site. As in most other areas of the business world, firms with strong business plans and well-considered strategies are most likely to survive.
