At the beginning of this chapter, I stated that “American time is monochronic” On the surface, this is true, but in a deeper sense, American (AE) time is both polychoronic and monochronic. M-time dominates the official world of business, government, the professions, entertainment, and sports. However, in the home – particularly the more traditional home in which women are the core around which everything revolves – one finds that P-time take over. How else can one raise several children at once, run a household, hold a job, be a wife, mother, nurse, tutor, chauffeur, and general fixer-upper ? Nevertheless, most of us automatically equate P-time with informal activities and with the multiple tasks and responsibilities and ties of women to network of people. At the preconscious level, M-time male time P-time is female time, and the ramifications of this difference are considerable.
