Introduction
The black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens (L.)
(Diptera: Stratiomyidae), is a large wasp-like
fly distributed throughout tropical and
temperate regions. It produces three
generations per year from April to November
in the southeastern region of the United States
(Sheppard et al. 1994) with larvae occurring
in very dense populations in organic wastes
such as manure (Sheppard 1983), coffee bean
pulp (Lardé 1989), and carrion (Tomberlin et
al. 2005).
