As mathematics education developed in the universities, it
tended to attractpeople whose primary interest was in rnatlte-
matical subject matter and who perhaps even -thought of
th_emse_ls/es as mathematicians- These mathematics educators
conducted historical and philosophical studies, surveys, and
eventually other types of empirical research. Their work and
that of the mathematicians raised many of the issues that re-
searchers are addressing today.
