The soil at each land use site (Table 1) was classified using criteria
outlined by the USDA Soil Survey Staff (2014). All three sites are characterized
as having well-drained and highly weathered surfaces (Ki
and Kr weathering indexes b2.0) which is typical for tropical, wet conditions
(Table S1). The mineralogy showed a predominance of the 1:1
clay mineral (kaolinite), Fe oxides (goethite, hematite and magnetite/
maghemite), Al oxide (gibbsite) and quartz within the silt + clay soil
fraction (b0.05 mm ∅) (Fig. S.1). Selected physical and chemical soil
characteristics within the 0–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm soil layers are
presented in Table 1.
