While China would like to argue that the Taiwan issue is a domestic problem
and a core interest, it is obvious that the problem has regional and
international repercussions
• Notably, no country would be allowed to have official ties with Taiwan
because of China’s insistence on its “one-China” policy.
• China would also not allow Taiwan to sit in any international body where
statehood is required, thus making Taiwan rather isolated internationally
• Quite obviously, tensions in the Taiwan Strait would affect not only both
sides, but also the whole Asia-Pacific region and beyond
• Perhaps most important of all, China has to deal with not only its
counterpart in Taiwan, but also the US
• In fact, the Taiwan issue is still one of the major bones of contention in
Sino-American relations
