Tencha is the main ingredient that is milled to make Matcha.Nishio-City, many towns and small villages around Nishio-City together produce over 70% of the nation's crop of Tencha. Now, Nishio-City is not only well known as the biggest amount of Tencha's supplier but Nishio tea has a deep flavor, fragrant aroma and a brilliant color. There is the Root of Nishio Tea in the Jisso-Ji
Tea was introduced into Nishio-City about 700 years ago, when Japan was the middle of the Kamakura era (1185-1333). It has been said that Nishio tea began when a patriarch Kokushi Shoichi brought tea seeds back from China (During So Dynasty), and planted those around the Jisso-Ji (Temple) built by Mitsuuji Kira in 1271.
