Reading 4 : Cultural Perception and Values
I agreed with “Obviously, we can only perceive parts of the things that surround us”. This shows human’s natural being that we will only see what we wanted to see and hardly observe the detail of surrounding environments. Because we will observe just the thing that we could clearly see it and skip some little thing. For example, if you are walking in the park that surrounded with the big trees you will see the tree and the green yard, but you might not see others living things such as ants, birds, squirrel, and even dry leaves. This is because your perception told you to see the thing that you have in your mind about what are you going to see in each place you are get in.
Another one that I agreed with is “The interpretation process plays a very important role in intercultural interactions”. This is absolutely true because you can see that the misunderstanding of international communication came from how each person understand thing in different ways. This is because of their perception that they have learned from their surrounding environment which became their cultures. For example, Thai people always smile to each other, including a stranger because they were taught that smiling is the way to make friendship and also can use as a greeting without saying hello at the same time. But for Finnish people they see smiling as weird and crazy because they were not used to talk to stranger or even look at each other that they do not know, they do not even stay close to each other at the bus stop in a rainy day.
