In launching an MST program, you are not filling the role of a psychologist; rather, you are teaching athletes the mental skills necessary to achieve success in sport and life. When you encounter athletes dealing with significant life or personal issues, you will need to wisely counsel them (or their parents) that professional help may be in order. Even after you have mastered the contents of this book, you are not equipped to provide the clinical assistance such athletes may need. Your role is to educate your athletes about how they can develop specific mental skills, and to refer those who need more psychologi cal assistance to appropriate professionals.
