THE media are currently full of news about counties running out of salt, when for the first time in 18 years we really need it.
Could someone explain why at the first hint of frost, salt is routinely and wastefully spread liberally over dry roads?

Frost in these conditions constitutes no significant extra skid risk, unlike the "gritting" which increases the risk by reducing friction and unnecessarily adds to river pollution.
