Of course, the whole “aboutness” question has become much more complex in the current hypertext/hypermedia environment. When one item can be linked to several others, it is no longer clear where one ends and another begins. Is a document only about what it deals with directly, or is it also about the topics dealt within the associated items? Little has been written on hypertext indexing per se, although it is touched upon to some extent in the hypertext/hypermedia literature. Sovoy (1995) and Salton et al. (1997) discuss possible methods for establishing hypertext links automatically, which can be considered a form of automatic indexing. This subject is dealt with in later chapter.
