Concerning their mode of learning, we have divided companies into four categories: STI learners,
DUI learners, both STI and DUI learners, and neither STI nor DUI learners. Table 9 shows the
distribution of the various learning patterns among firms in our sample. About one third of all firms
have not institutionalized any of the learning patterns and the group of companies that have
established both modes together represent about the same share. In addition, more companies have
introduced the STI mode of learning (54%) compared to those who have introduced the DUI mode
of learning (45%).
