TELEKOM Brunei (TelBru) officially launched its latest venture into the wireless segment yesterday after seeing an encouraging response from users over a two-month trial period.
In a speech delivered at yesterday’s launch, TelBru Chief Marketing Officer Lim Ming Soon said the telco has seen an average of 4,000 daily logins.
Each user spends about 90 megabytes (mb) of data use on ’TelBru WiFi’ since it was first rolled out in December 2015.
Lim said the service is part of the company’s aspirations to become more than just a fixed line operator as it allows users to connect to wireless hotspots in certain locations using their registered TelBru ID.
“This is also to cater to the increasing demand for WiFi coverage in public areas where portability and accessibility to the Internet is critical,” he said.
Lim said the service is now available in over 50 locations across the country, including commercial areas such as restaurants and malls. The company is also working to make the service available in government buildings. He said the number of locations where the service is available will continue to grow in the coming weeks as he expects more establishments to come on board after seeing the benefits of the service.
Lim said the service will also play a leading role in keeping the country connected and enable its aspirations to become a Smart Nation which will generate business.
“This will open up opportunities for entrepreneurs to develop and embark on Smart Nation applications and solutions and to spur innovation and solutions development for a new generation of public services,” he said.
Lim said users who connect to the service using their postpaid broadband account will be getting a connection speed of 5mbps per device, resulting in a less congested Internet experience.
In his speech as guest of honour, Eddie Dato Paduka Haji Sunny, Permanent Secretary (Technical and Professional) at the Ministry of Development, said the service can help businesses attract customers.
Eddie, who is also a board member of TelBru, said combining WiFi access with an active social media presence means increased time for customers on the premises. He said the service will also contribute to extended learning for students as they are able to access information beyond the classrooms.
