The final hypothesis that internal fit would lead to improved performance was
supported only in relation to the better performance of the strategic HRM hotels’
performance in relation to market share, sales growth and service innovations. This
provides limited and weak support for the internal fit hypothesis.
It is important to note that in asking hotels about their performance and HR
outcomes, almost all of the respondents always judged that they were performing at
an average or above average level by comparison with other hotels. This suggests a
very positive outlook on their part. It would also appear that there was an overall
better take-up of HRM in Barbados than the UK. However, one must acknowledge
that the data on the UK against which Barbados is being compared were collected in
1995. The situation in the UK may well have moved on since then
