Because previous management research conducted in Russia has not explicitly
focused on the relationship between organizational culture and effectiveness, the
remainder of this section reviews some of the more important Russian management
studies to provides a useful background for the current study. The most extensive study on comparative US-Russian management practices is Lawrence and Vlachoutsicos’
(1990) book Behind Factory Walls and two related articles (Lawrence & Vlachoutsicos,
1993; Vlachoutsicos & Lawrence, 1990). Their project was based on data collected by
the Harvard research team and their Russian colleagues at four US and four Russian
electronic and truck factories. The study provided several powerful insights into
managerial decision making in Russia, but their focus on case studies places limits on the
generality of their findings.
