Patients with severe burns (second or third degree burns to greater
than 10% of their total body surface area) often require aggressive
nutritional support. The body’s reaction to severe burns is a
hypermetabolic response: greatly increased energy requirements,
sustained release of catabolic hormones leading to muscle breakdown,
and poor glycaemic control. Enteral feeding - controlled
feeding of a prepared formula directly into the stomach or small
intestine via a tube - is a mainstay of treatment for patients with
severe burns
