With Colton Tooley, the moment in which I felt I became an active witness was when I tried to sync up video time codes and “see” the scene from five different perspectives simultaneously, and realized they were all wrong. So to sync things up I had to listen over and over again to each 90-minute tape, hearing each cop’s voice and trying to figure out where they connected. Wearing headphones, pressed in closely to my ears, trying to tweeze out what people were saying amid the chaos, I started to get to know these cops. I felt like I was with them in this sound space.
