In 2010, elders from VOSP identified the need for a leadership development program
(LDP) to help address the circumstances unsettling their community. In this paper we
discuss the leadership development program with VOSP in Logan City as a case study
to advance the concept of a “sustainable learning community”. We draw from and
extend Senge’s (1990) concept of the “learning organization”, while acknowledging that
scholars continue to debate the concept and its various interpretations, especially in
recent times (Eijkman, 2011). The importance and concept of sustainability in a
learning community have become more and more significant in the twenty-first
century, as explained in the next section.
