The average share of Ethiopian coffee in the Japanese market is very small
(less than 7 %), considering the Japanese market for all Arabica and Robusta coffee
types. Moreover, the volume of exports to this market has been decreasing from its
peak of 0.64 million bags in 2006 down to 0.14 million bags in 2008 and decreased
further to 0.02 million bags in 2009 (Table 8). This situation, which may be attributed
to a contamination problem that pushed Japan to lower on Ethiopian coffee import
volume, is a very serious problem for Ethiopian export performance.
