One may also wonder whether the type of society which has emerged during the transition is very conducive to such long-term commitments at policy level as forestry development would require. The future of forestry and of the whole forest sector may be more dependent on the prospects of private investments — domestic and foreign — in forest industries. If domestic financial–industrial groups find the forest-sector investments attractive and foreign companies do likewise, it may also give impetus to the more long-term oriented development of forest policy.
