These considerations do not imply that microalgae
are not effective in wastewater treatment and in
nutrient removal. Rather, they point out that the true
role of microalgae should be reassessed considering the
amount of nutrients recycled into biomass as well as
the effects of their biological activities on water
chemistry, since the simple comparison of the initial
and final nutrient concentrations might lead to an
overvaluation of their effectiveness as nutrient
recyclers.
