Tempering of type
430 proceeds in a comparable manner to tempering
in fully martensitic 12% Cr type 410
stainless steel (Fig. 15).
Postweld heat treatment of type 430 at 760 °C
(1400 °F) tempers martensite and replenishes
chromium to depleted areas surrounding
chromium carbide precipitates in the weld and
HAZ. Softening takes place relatively quickly,
while annealing at this temperature to restore
corrosion resistance takes up to 4 h, depending
on the specific composition of the alloy and its
thermomechanical processing history.
