A preliminary study explored communication difficulties between
nurses and patients with dementia from a nurse’s point of
view. Different language and Blocked messages are communication
difficulties experienced by nurses. Learning to comprehend dementia
patients’ expressive and receptive messages and avoiding
specific task-oriented communication is the first step to reach a
common language. To be able to recognize patients’ underlying
needs through their manifestation of problem behaviors, patientcentered
communication should be implemented. Given the
young age of nurses caring for patients with dementia, dementia
communication programs must be included in nursing curricula
