Lesson VOC 16
Task: Fold boxes.
Prerequisites: SEN 12, SEN 13
Concept: .R.tivity deals with breaking down cardboard boxes to prepare them for
reeve ling or mier storage for later reuse in a work setting. Although this is basi-
cally a gross-motor action, some fine-motor skills in the form of gripping the flaps of the box arc also needed. The specific types of boxes will likely be unique to each work situation; therefore, different sizes should be used in the sample lesson.
Behavioral Objective: When requested to "please break down these boxes," the stu¬dent will .parate the attached surfaces and fold each box into a flat form to a 9095 ac¬curacy level for 20 trials of five boxes per trial.
Materials: Various-size cardboard boxes with at least one end still glued or otherwise attached. (Note. Sometimes these materials can be donated to a class by local businesses.)
Task Analysis:
1. Assist the student in locating and identifying the scaled portion on the sample boxes.
2. Physically guide the student through the action needed to grip the appropriate places on the box that are needed to beg-in breaking it down.
3. Continue Step 2, actually pulling the glued flaps apart and then folding the box into a flattened shape.
4. Continue Step 3, reducing all guidance until only the total-task request of "please break down these bons" is needed for five boxes to be broken down. Have the student place the folded boxes into a pile.
5. Add to Step 4 the movement and placement of the folded boxes to a desig¬nated storage area or near a cardboard recycling receptacle
