Because the investigation was designed to examine the degree to which T tonsurans was present in the population (surveillance only) the nature and extent of active disease if present were not documented at the time of sampling. However children with evidence of tinea capitis (eg, alopecia scaling crusting inflammation or lymphadenopathy)
were referred to the appropriate school staff members for care according to the policies in place at each institution.
