About referencing conventions
This section discusses referencing conventions in academic writing and gives links to examples.
In academic writing, we use agreed referencing (or citation) conventions to acknowledge the sources we have consulted in our reading and research. We use these conventions for both textual referencing (within the body of the text) and for references in bibliographies and reference lists.
Correct use of these conventions:
acknowledges the academic community you are working within.
informs the reader of the credibility and validity of your sources and the extent to which they are current.
Referencing conventions cover a wide range of possible sources including:
books by single and multiple authors
journals and journal articles
edited collections
non-print media such as videos
the Internet
