As a result of these policies and investments, Singapore was the world’s busiest
container port in terms of total shipping containers according to the American
Association of Port Authorities (2009), until it was overtaken by the port of
Shanghai in 2010. Singapore is still the world’s busiest transshipment port,
handling one fifth of the world’s container transshipment throughput (PSA 2010),
as well as handling half of the world’s annual supply of crude oil.
