Security forces in Narathiwat have worked closely with the Islamic Council of Narathiwat Province in resolving the situation in the deep South. Mr. Hayee Abdulrosak Alee, Chairman of the Islamic Council of Narathiwat
Province, spoke with a group of foreign journalists on various southern issues when they visited his office on 30 June 2010, as part of the press tour organized by the Foreign Office of the Government Public Relations Department.
He said that less than 3 percent of the local population in the deep South supported the idea of “separatism” and wanted to make Thailand’s southern border provinces into an independent state. This idea is not new, as it came up 50 years ago. Only a small group of people is in favor of this idea, with no support from most people. However, many people have called for justice from the central government regarding their problems, and this call is normal, since the concept of justice exists in all societies in the world. He said that if the government did not create conditions leading to conflicts,
the problems in the South would not be aggravated. He believed that southern problems would be settled, but they need more time, saying that today local officials and religious leaders have moved closer together through discussions
