According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and
Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standard for residential ventilation
(ASHRAE, 2010), the required minimum airflow rate for intermittent
kitchen exhausts is 170 m3/h with a maximum sound rating
of 3 sones as installed. The Home Ventilation Institute (HVI) guidance
(HVI, 2008) specifies a minimum flow rate of 68 m3/h per linear foot
of cooking appliances width and a recommended flow rate of
170 m3/h per linear foot of the width against a wall. In addition, the
National Manufactured Housing Construction and Safety Standards
(HUD, 1994) requires installation of a kitchen ventilation system capable
of exhausting 170 m3/h of air to the outdoors.
