Calli from crown meristem tips of ‘Queen’ were initiated and proliferated using MS medium with 10mg/liter picloram.
High percentage of growth and shoot proliferation was observed in MS supplemented with 50 µM BAP and 10 µM GA after 8 weeks in-vitro.
15 Gy produced the most variegation in young shoots (chlorophyll variants) maintained in-vitro. The variants appeared to have yellow and green color combinations on the young leaves of pineapple ‘Queen’ variety.
Variegation in young leaves was observed at 15, 20, 25 and 30 Gy when transplanted in the greenhouse.
Induced chlorophyll variant could serve as bases for ornamental types in pineapple while the in-vitro culture techniques in pineapple could be utilized as tool for induced mutation breeding.
