One of the most widely-recognized activities under the safety-management program is the
performance of hazard-surveillance rounds on a regular basis (Standard EC.2.10.1).
Although these rounds may be conducted by one or two people (e.g., the safety officer
and the manager of the unit under surveillance), it is often more effective to broaden the
objectives of the process and include other personnel in a small hazard-surveillance team.
Additional participants may be drawn from infection control, environmental services
(housekeeping), facilities engineering, and clinical engineering. Although these additional
participants may focus primarily on their own areas of responsibility, they also can
provide complementary perspectives for other members of the team..
