Lean is all about recognizing and eliminating waste. People are taught that the seven major wastes are conveyance, correction, inventory, waiting, overprocessing, overproduction and motion. Sustainability is about finding win-win-win design solutions for social responsibility, environmental performance and business results -- the triple bottom line. Consider recycling. At Ford more than 800 parts from recycled materials are used in production, diverting 70,000 tons of waste per year from landfills. Diverting material from landfills is good for humans and the environment, and shareholders benefit from the cost savings. Clearly people need more lean green and quality thinking to develop better systemwide solutions. When you consider the systemwide picture, the distinctions between lean, green and quality begin to blur. In the end, it is all about common sense, doing the right thing as a society and making the world people live in a better place for all and the children.
