• Mainstreaming the concept of “intersectionality” as a way to build cross-sectoral collaboration
ASC recognizes the interconnections between LGBTIQ issues and other social concerns. There is also a recognition that the experiences of discrimination faced by LGBTIQ persons in the region are complex given the different levers of oppression (e.g. direct violence by families, police repression, etc.), the different social contexts (e.g. migration, climate change, lack of democratic space, disability, aging), and the various structural constraints (e.g. poverty, culture and traditions) that simultaneously operate. The complex experiences of discrimination LGBTIQ persons face necessitates ASC and other LGBTIQ groups to foster solidarity and collaborate with other sectoral groups working for social change. This can be done by mainstreaming SOGIE into their advocacies and programs, and by forming tactical alliances in specific campaigns.
