and to counteract peristalsis, H pylori possess between
one and five flagellae with terminal bulbs at a
single pole.16 Flagellated, motile H pylori strains colonize
gnotobiotic piglets, whereas an aflagellate
strain did not, indicating that motility is necessary
for the induction and maintenance of gastric colonization.
