Supporters and opponents of the military regime in Thailand staged separate demonstrations in front of the United Nations head office in New York Saturday (about 10 pm Bangkok time) to give morale support to and to protest against Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha. Supporters held welcoming banners and sang national anthem in support of the prime minister who is currently attending the UN General Assembly. They also rallied for the second time the next morning to give him moral support. Separately, another group of Thais allegedly led by Pavin Chatchavalpongpan, a Thai lecturer at Kyoto University in Japan, and Chom Petpradab, a former TV anchorman, protested against Prime Minister Prayut in front of the UN head office in New York. The protesting group also threatened to sue the prime minister for the decision of the National Council for Peace and Order to withdraw the passport of Mr Pavin for his refusal to report to the NCPO.
