The electronic stability programme (ESP) works together with the ABS. The ESP in cludes the electronic differential lock (EDL) and the traction control system (TCS).
The ESP switches on automatically when the engine is turned on. It can, if necessary, be switched on and off by pressing the button.
When the system is switched off, the ESP warning lamp will light up-see page 20.
The ESP should always be switched on under normal circumstances. Only in certain cases, when wheel spin is required, is it advantageous to switch off the system.
For example
- when driving with snow chains
- when driving in deep snow or on a loose surface
- when freeing the vehicle if it is stuck.
The system should then be switched on again.
Note
In order to guarantee a fault-free function of the ESP, all four wheels must have the same tyres. Different roll circumferences on the tyres could lead to an unwanted reduction in engine performance.
Warning
The limits defined by the laws of physics cannot be negated by the ESP. This is particularly applicable to icy and wet roads.
The driver's style of driving must always be adapted to suit the current road quality and traffic situation. The increased safety aspect offered by the ESP should not encourage the driver to take unnecessary risks!
