2. CHOMSKY AND GOODMAN The whole language approach to phonics grew outof Noam Chomskys ideas about languageacquisition. In 1967, Ken Goodman had an idea about reading,which he considered similar to Chomskys, and hewrote a widely-cited article calling reading a"psycholinguistic guessing game". He chidededucators for attempting to apply what he saw asunnecessary orthographic order to a process thatrelied on holistic examination of words.
