Executive Summary
This study examined databases at Ferrum College for classes entering Fall 2004,
2005, and 2006. The purpose was to identify the relationship between high school grade
point average (HSGPA) and two-part SAT scores (sum of math and verbal scores) and
academic success at the end of the first year and persistence to the second year of college.
The study revealed:
• There is no statistically significant relationship between the HSGPA and
academic success at the end of the first year.
• There is no statistically significant relationship between the entering SAT and
academic success at the end of the first year.
• There is a weak positive correlation between HSGPA and persistence to the
second year.
• There is no statistically significant relationship between the entering SAT and
persistence to the second year.
• Findings were not sufficiently conclusive to use in recommending or formulating
policy changes.
