The potential physical effects of SCD on
pregnancy can vary from woman to woman but
it is recognised that these complications can lead to
increased maternal and fetal morbidity and
mortality (Sickle Cell Society, 2008; Al Jama et
al, 2009; Ngô et al, 2010; Chase et al, 2010; Lewis,
2011). Apart from the physical effects of SCD on
pregnancy, the woman also has to cope with the
psychological and social stresses of living with a
chronic lifelong illness.
