A wire mesh covering the outlet of the shower prevents large particles from being washed into the 200-litre open grease and grit trap. The collected greywater from the grease and grit trap is then conveyed into a vertical- ow lter (0.36 m2) with an upper layer of sand (30 cm), a middle layer of charcoal (30 cm) and a bottom layer of gravel (20 cm). The thereby ltered water then enters a subsurface irrigated bed (8 m2) planted with fruits and vegetables (see Figure 5-2 and Photo 5-2). The greywater fed through perforated pipes into this garden is equipped with two aeration pipes. For hygienic reasons, only crops with above-ground edible parts are planted. The garden is fenced off to prevent damage by domestic animals.
