Admiral Narong Piphattanasai, the minister for the Ministry of Education, revealed today that the cabinet has agreed that corporate tax would be collected from tutorial schools.
This came about because such establishments are considered commercial enterprises, he said.
As for fears that such tax collection might result in higher tutorial fees, the minister stated that this was not a matter for concern as fee hikes will have to be approved by the relevant government departments.
As present, there are all together around 2,000 tutorial schools throughout the country and in accordance with the bill, they are required to pay 20% corporate tax similar to private enterprises.
For the tutors themselves, they are required to pay personal income tax.
Private schools, however, are exempted from paying corporate taxes.
In any event, the matter will have to be approved by the National Legislative Assembly before coming into force, he said.
