If we tell a child that we have 3/8 of something, then he must be made to understand that fractions are composed of othernumbers. The number 8 is made up of: 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1, or 2+2+2+2 or 3+3+2, etc. (here is the law of associativity again). Now we can explain to a child that 6/7 is made upb of 2/7+2/7+2/7, or 1/7+1/7+1/7+1/7+1/7+1/7,or 2/7+2/7+1/7+1/7,and many other combinations.
