Proper design and installation of overhead lines
is required in order tominimize exposure to strikes
and resultant flashovers. Software tools are available for the system engineer to reevaluate the design, whether a newline or an old one, and quantify
the risk; hardware tools are available tomeasure parameters, such as footing resistance of poles and
other equipment; and statistical data is available to
provide guidancewith respect to defining a normal
or expected number of events. Careful evaluation of
the transmission-line protection scheme is essential to provide maximum protection without incurring nuisance events. This should be reevaluated
for any changes to the line.
