To provide some context to students for how social media technology
could be used to facilitate group project work in an educational environment, I
used an interactive, technology-enhanced lecture describing how different social
media technologies such as FacebookTM, TwitterTM, wikis and blogs were being
used in higher education classes. To exhibit the ease and power of
videoconferencing as an open and free Web 2.0 tool, this lecture was delivered
using SkypeTM. To ensure that this modality would perform as technically
intended, I worked with the instructor of the class the week before the delivery of
this seminar to configure both the in-class system and my remote system such that
they would be capable of communicating with each other on the day of the
scheduled seminar. This testing took about 1½ hours to validate that it was
operational.
